AI with a Heart: Integrating Emotional Intelligence and Sustainability in Smart Education for 21st Century Learners
In smart cities, integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education is redefining the learning paradigm. This paper explores the confluence of AI with emotional intelligence (EI) and sustainability to enhance the quality of smart education. It also explores how AI-driven educational systems, while technologically advanced, must also address the emotional states of students, faculty, and society. Considering recent actors protesting in Hollywood, a qualitative approach was taken to systematically review literature connecting emotional, educational, and relevant development goals. Through an analysis of current practices and a case study, we identify challenges, ethical considerations, and best practices in implementing emotionally intelligent and sustainable smart education. Given the established success of emotionally intelligent professionals and online learning environments, a brief history of emotional intelligence, the interaction between emotional intelligence in AI-based learning, and research from trauma-informed pedagogical practices are summarized. From educators’ latest effort to update Bloom’s Taxonomy with AI to approaches to ensuring academic integrity, a case study of smart education practices with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) objectives was recommended. Specifically, actionable strategies for educators, policymakers, and technologists to foster a balanced, future-ready educational ecosystem that is more effective and empathetic educational experiences. The study concludes with challenges, ethics, best practices, and recommendations to support robust accreditation standards that encompass these dimensions, ensuring the holistic development of learners and educators in smart universities and cities. Future research should concentrate on assessing EI while using AI to analyze the impact on academic performance, cognitive skills, and socio-emotional development skills of 21st-century learners.
