Comparative Experimental Study on Solar Electro-Osmosis and Conventional Electro-Osmosis
Abstract As an effective method for accelerating the consolidation of soft soils, electro-osmosis has not been widely used in practice because of its high electric energy consumption. With the development of renewable solar energy, the solar energy is applied to electro-osmosis method and this paper has proposed a new solar electro-osmosis technology. By monitoring and comparing the electric current, voltage, water discharge, water content, shear strength, energy consumption and carbon emission, this paper presents the performance of solar electro-osmosis method itself to improve the consolidation of soft clay based on the laboratory experiment as well as the different electro-osmosis behaviors between conventional and solar electro-osmosis. The test results show that both electric current and voltage in solar electro-osmosis are not stable and vary periodically in day time and the solar electro-osmosis can accelerate consolidation of soft clay effectively with a less energy consumption of unit water drainage compared to conventional electro-osmosis. Besides, the solar electro-osmotic shear strength appears more uniform than that of conventional electro-osmosis. Moreover, the corresponding carbon emission of solar electro-osmosis is much less as well. Thus, with the comparison to conventional electro-osmosis, the solar electro-osmosis technology shows better drainage efficiency and environmental benefits.
