Hydrogeological Factors and the Safe Operation of Hydraulic Structures
Numerous cases of accidents involving hydraulic structures are known from many countries. These accidents can cost lives and cause considerable economic damage. The breakdown of these structures can be a sequential process, whereby one may identify a number of phenomena and processes in causally linked relationships. The origin of such accidents is often explained by the complicated geological—tectonic and engineering— geological structure of areas where they are constructed, and, in particular, by the influence of the water. The influence of the latter is especially evident on earth dams. The classification of these accidents shows that the hydrogeological factor conditioned by percolation processes was the main reason for many of the dam failures.
