Solid-State Reduction Studies on Manganese Ores
Abstract The main purpose of this study was to find the optimum conditions to produce a charge material for ferromanganese production with high content of iron and manganese carbides from manganese ore by carbothermic reduction with a view to reduce consumption of electric power during ferromanganese production. The effects of temperature and amount of active carbon on this reduction were investigated. The lump ore was ground in a ball mill to get fine powder of manganese ore. It was then mixed with active carbon (pet coke or carbonised lignite called LECO) and 10% MgO. Pellets and briquettes were made with the above material mixed in different ratios. Experiments were performed in a horizontal tube furnace that could be heated up to 1250 °C. After each experiment, weight loss data were obtained and an attempt was made to relate it to percentage reduction. Compression strengths of the reduced samples were also measured. X-ray diffraction, SEM-EDS, and chemical analyses were done in order to determine whether or not carbide phases have been obtained.
