Gap analysis of mentoring practices in quantity surveying firms
The paper carried out gap analyses of mentoring practices in quantity surveying consultancy firms with a view to ensuring competitive advantage of quantity surveyors in the construction industry. The participation and role of quantity surveying professionals in mentoring relationships, as well as the required and exhibited mentoring practices in quantity surveying consultancy firms were evaluated through a survey design. Closed-ended questionnaire was used to sample quantity surveying firms in the study area. Quadrant and Gap analyses were used in the analysis of the data gathered. The research reveals a good level of participation in mentoring relationships among quantity surveying professionals in the firms. The study further revealed the gap between the required and the exhibited mentoring practices in quantity surveying consultancy firms. In addition, the study gave recommendations for closing up the gap for the sustainability of competitive advantage of quantity surveyors and the firms. This paper concludes that there exist a gap and further highlights the gap between the required and exhibited mentoring practices in quantity surveying consultancy firms and discussed the practices that are required but not exhibited. These practices when exhibited in the consultancy firms will aid the career and psychosocial development of young quantity surveyors.
