Metropolitan area labour market changes: Determinants and comparisons by industry
Kleiner M. M. (1985) Metropolitan area labour market changes: determinants and comparisons by industry, Reg. Studies 19, 131–138. This study tests the extent to which individuals, who are employed in export-oriented and locally-oriented sectors within metropolitan areas, respond in a homogeneous manner to the same economic and contextual variables. Using a neoclassical approach, a metropolitan labour market model is specified that is used to comare employed persons in detailed industries on specific aspects of change in the labour market. Using data from the 10% Continuous Work History Sample, the results showed some significant differences in the determinants of labour market change across the two major industry groups in the analysis. The estimates suggest that the relative responsiveness of employed persons to changes in the structure of locally-oriented industries was greater than for persons in export-oriented ones. The study supports the further study of local labour market changes by sector that includes industry groups.
