A case for teleological Urban form history and ideas: Lewis Mumford, F.L. Wright, Jane Jacobs and Victor Gruen
Teleological urban form theory is structured to advocate various types of planning action, the two major ingredients being visions of a good and beautiful future city and sketches of history to inform and support this particular image. The art of writing this type of literature seems on the wane, and this article argues for carefully composing more of it. The paper begins by defining what normative teleological theory is. It then explains how its arguments work — using the thought of four American teleological planning theorists as representatives, and an analytical diagram for their comparison. Then there is a commentary section in which it is noted how these sketch theories can be used to evaluate American urban form history, and a review of some of their more challenging ideas. The paper ends with some ideas for composing more action‐oriented planning literature.
