This is a revised version of a paper given to the Regional Studies Conference in Glasgow in May 1981. The authors were asked to put forward the views of the Cambridge Economic Policy Group (CEPG) on the economy as a whole and to draw out any implications for the UK regions. A diagnosis of the UK economic problem and its regional manifestation is followed by a discussion of the macro-economic strategy favoured by the group which aims to ensure that the economy can be expanded at a permanently faster rate without running into balance of payments problems. Only a strategy of this kind could make a significant impact on the very high rates of unemployment in the depressed regions.
