Dam Safety and Nonstructural Damage Reduction Measures
This article provides a brief description of the dam failure history of the United States, The evolution of U.S. Bureau of Reclamation practice on dam safety has gradually changed from structural to nonstructural measures. A systematic analysis of factors influencing loss of life resulting from dam failure is made in this article. Nonstructural measures such as the preparation of inundation mapping, the use of a dam failure warning system, and the development of an emergency preparedness program can significantly reduce the loss of life in the event of a dam failure.
