A project by the Eduardo Torroja Institute in Madrid has focused on the mechanical performance of lightweight panels (= 30 kg) based on concrete made with rice husks treated with lime. The 6 cm thick components measure 90 × 60 cm and are hand-formed to accord with methods that are suitable for developing countries. The article discusses the results of tests for flexure and axial compression on short series of these components.
