Canadian small town renaissance: Implications for settlement system concepts
Hodge G. (1983) Canadian small town renaissance: implications for settlement system concepts, Reg. Studies 17, 19–28. Through the presentation of findings of recent tendencies in growth of Canadian towns and villages it is possible to provide a more complete backdrop on the dynamics of contemporary settlement systems. Towns and villages are found to be stable or growing in population, housing and retail establishments. Concurrently, metropolitan areas are in a flux of shift and decline. It is argued that the renascence of towns and villages requires a redefinition of settlement system concepts such as hierarchy, distance-decay and central place thresholds.
