A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Placemaking, Preservation and Urban History
In accordance with Kevin Lynch's proposal to choose a past to construct a future, this article explores the political, historical, and cultural past of the ethnic minorities and women in Los Angeles. The goal was to develop a “theory of place” that would connect historical research to present issues and thereby establish a new agenda for historic preservation, public art, and urban design. The theme of economic development helped determine the selection of the buildings and the sites to be studied. As economic development was defined in terms of production (and not the customary consumption), the core of the city emerged as the focus. The sources included oral history, as well as written and visual documents. The results of the research are summarized in an annotated map which illustrates the multiethnic economic history of downtown Los Angeles, and specific proposals are made for historic preservation and urban design.
