A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
History and theory often become disconnected from the studio sequence and isolated within the larger scope of a young designer's education. In this article, I discuss the development of a design foundation course that provides beginning students experience with history, theory, and design, treated not as individual topics, but as interrelated activities. The course is grounded in Martin Heidegger's critique of Western thought's isolating tendencies, and his development of a foundational concept of history, in which it is not the objects of history that matter but the relationships and interactions that occur between them that are truly instructive and enlightening.
