Population migration between the regions of Great Britain, 1971–9

Using data from the National Health Service Central Register, this paper traces inter-regional population movements in Great Britain during 1971–9. Population dispersal from South East England, which previously had been increasing in scale, declined rapidly after 1973. This change was a key factor in the reduced net inflows into other regions in the southern half of Britain and the increasing net migration losses from regions in northern Britain. The extent of population displacement between regions was reduced but the north-to-south shift of population was increased.
