Regional inequalities in the distribution of office employment have caused some concern in recent years. In 1965 legislation to limit the increase of office space and employment in south-east England was introduced. Distribution maps of decentralized offices and their related employment provide the basis for an analysis of the success of office decentralization. A critical analysis of existing policies adds further support to the evidence that there is a great dichotomy between policy and practice. More positive, as distinct from negative, controls are required but much research into the concept of “office centres” is necessary if the dispersal of office employment is to fit successfully into regional planning strategies.
