Experimental techniques used in the investigation of coupled THMC behaviour of geomaterials
Environmental geomechanics involve coupled thermo-hydro-chemo-mechanical (THMC) phenomena in geomaterials, in relation with waste confinement (in the surface or at great depth) using engineered compacted barriers or liners, or with polluted soils (organic or soluble contaminant). In both cases, various mass transport phenomena (liquid or gas) occur through the soil. These transfers may induce coupled mechanical reactions. Starting from basic experimental techniques taken from soil mechanics and from the extensions developed for unsaturated soils, for thermomechanical testing and for the study of chemical transferts, the techniques to investigate fluid, temperature and chemical species transfers in soils, together with the couplings induced, are described.
