Hungerford Bridge: The ugly duckling becomes a Swan
This article documents the history of Hungerford Bridge, which has a reputation as London's ugliest bridge. From its birth in 1864 it attracted criticism and from 1900 until 1945 London's design establishment launched several concerted attacks on it aimed at bringing about its demolition. The bridge's obtrusiveness into the Thames vista was seen to take precedence over its positive role in providing convenient railway access to the West End and a unique pedestrian walkway over the Thames. Hungerford Bridge withstood the attacks and lived on into quiet old age until the resurgence, in the late 1980s, of interest in the public domain and pedestrian access across the Thames. This led to a different perspective on the attributes of Hungerford Bridge and has produced ambitious plans for investment in the walkway across it.
