Waterlogging in Sriramsagar irrigation project
Waterlogging is becoming a problem in many command areas of irrigation projects in India. This study is a detailed analysis of waterlogging in the command area of the Sriramsagar Irrigation Project. Waterlogging has been given little attention by the farmers or the administrators. Yields have decreased and areas affected by waterlogging have increased over the years because of the lack of an integrated approach to water use management. The possible remedies, as well as the obstacles to implementing these remedial measures, have been identified. Unless corrective action is initiated in the major command areas, extension of irrigation facilities will only increase the incidence of waterlogging and the consequent loss of fertile soil for productive purposes.
