Design, Fabrication and Construction of a Deployable Double-Layer Tensegrity Grid
Deployable double-layer tensegrity grids (DDLTGs) are pre-stressed spatial frames containing two networks of tensile members forming the top and bottom chords in the form of tessellations, the nodes of which are linked by vertical and/or inclined web members in compression (usually struts) and/or in tension (usually cables), in such a way that these structures are able to be folded and unfolded. This paper presents a procedure to design, fabricate and assemble a light and inexpensive DDLTG composed of tensegrity modules Quastrut-S. A prototype 4×4 m grid structure was constructed, in a short time frame, to test the structural behavior and deployability of the DDLTG. In its folded configuration, the perimeter of the structure is less than 1.80 m, being contained in a cylinder of 0.28 m radius and 1.70 m height. The structure can therefore be easily stored, transported and erected within a short time frame, allowing it to be used as a temporary shelter, exhibition roof structure, etc.
