The social pattern of personal geographies
Collison P. and Kennedy J. (1981) The social pattern of personal geographies, Reg. Studies 15, 247–262. It is commonly observed that people in modern societies are geographically mobile. To determine how this mobility is realized in terms of the direct experience of different parts of England and Wales a survey was made of post-graduate social work students in 19 universities. Informants were asked which parts of the country they had ever been in and how long they had spent in each part. A considerable variation between places in terms of direct experience of this sort was discovered. It is suggested that information of this kind is relevant for the further exploration of mental maps.
