The CNIT–La Défense Railway Station in Paris: Answers to Complex Constraints
Numerous constraints surround the construction of the new La Défense underground railway station, currently under construction, as part of the extension of the RER E (EOLE) line. This station is located directly beneath the iconic concrete shell structure of the Centre of New Industries and Technologies (CNIT), connected by prestressed ties, built in the 1950s. Large buildings ranging in size from 5 to 10 levels are sheltered under the vault. The excavation of the wide volumes to be opened underneath must not cause any movement of their foundations or deformations that could affect the supports of the vault. The construction will deal as well with other challenges such as the presence of the water table and limitation of nuisances for the neighbourhood. A quite comprehensive programme of investigation and in-depth reconnaissance—including sophisticated modelling, in situ measurements and the use of a reconnaissance well—was carried out in parallel with the design process in order to validate the choice of location for the station and demonstrate effective risk control in relation to both the iconic CNIT structure and the other neighbouring structures.
