Reliability analysis of riprap stability around bridge piers
A probabilistic method was developed for estimating the stable riprap size around bridge piers. Uncertainties in determining the hydraulic variables of a design storm event as well as uncertainties in the accuracy of the empirical model were included in this analysis. By using this method, riprap size can be calculated with any desired reliability level and bridge life span considering all the involved uncertainties quantitatively. It is, therefore, possible for design engineers to decide on the riprap size based on economical and/or construction restrictions. Application of this method was illustrated in two case studies with different protection configurations including riprap and combinations of riprap, collar and guide walls. The correlation of bridge life span and its failure probability with riprap size was also studied. Finally, it was shown that for a certain reliability level, the stable riprap size decreases considerably utilizing a guide wall and collar in combination with riprap.
