A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Collaboration in Education: The Diploma Project at the Bartlett School, 1988-89
Collaboration is rarely emphasized in the standard, highly individually oriented education in architecture schools, even though most building projects require greater or lesser amounts of collaborative effort. This paper explores a two year program at the Bartlett School in London to encourage collaboration in the design studio. With three different projects, and a variety of subgroups and divisions of responsibilities, students gained valuable experience in working on urban planning, as well as on the development of individual buildings. In the end, faculty determined that collaboration produced far richer and stimulating results in the studio than did the customary emphasis on competition among students.
