Impact of surrogate selection on risk assessment for total petroleum hydrocarbons
Environmental contamination involving total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) is being investigated and remediated at underground storage tanks, tank farms, pipelines, and refineries across the country. Human health and environmental risk play a significant role in decision making at these sites. However, risk assessment for sites contaminated with petroleum products typically is complicated by inadequate information about the composition of TPH present at the site and the physical and chemical properties and toxicity of the components. To address these data gaps, risk assessors can select surrogate compounds to represent the movement of TPH in the environment at the site and toxicity of TPH present at the site. This article illustrates the potential impact of choice of surrogates on risk estimates, which in turn affect remediation costs.
