Well-Being And Settlement Type
Eight social indicators are combined to produce an index of well-being for different settlement types at the 1976, 1981, 1986 and 1991 censuses. Overall, levels of well-being declined markedly in 1991 after improvements from 1976 to 1986. Remote areas have the worst scores but well-being has deteriorated most rapidly in urban areas. There is evidence of increasing differentiation between places overall and in each settlement type.
