A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism

Four broad conclusions from the ESRC Inner Cities Research suggest a platform on which work on ESRC's Changing Urban and Regional System programme can build: cities have suffered severe economic and social collapse, depressed regions are now in direct competition with cities, benefit will only accrue to cities from a consistent urban policy and benefits do not trickle down to the disadvantaged. Three sets of questions are posed: the complex spatial interplay of processes needs to be further explored; scenarios of the future need to be developed; and the interlinking of social and economic issues needs to be argued in the policy debate.
