The Relationship of Dwelling Size and Population Potential: Practical Implications for Strategic Urban Planning
The relationship of dwelling size, dwelling occupancy and resultant demographic outcomes has important implications for urban planning. This article aims to clarify the links in a study of Australian metropolises. Descriptive analysis and simulation are applied to the occupancy of (occupied) private dwellings by bedroom count using data from the Australian Census of Population and Housing. Results indicate significant variability in dwelling occupancy by dwelling size across and within metropolises. Given the range of housing types in Australia, planning analysis based on average dwelling occupancy derived from large statistical databases could misjudge population outcomes, subsequently complicating infrastructure provision and social policy.
