Housers and Other Architects: Pragmatism and Aesthetics in Recent Competitions
Since 1984, an unprecedented series of nine national housing design competitions has been held in North America. At a time when cutbacks in government funding severely limited the construction of affordable housing, these competitions asserted that the design of economical housing in central cities and adjacent suburbs is an essential aspect of architectural practice. Though problems with the development process made it difficult to translate proposals into buildings, the competition results provide an invaluable archive of ideas for subsidized housing in North American cities.
