Gardens, civic art and town planning: The work of Thomas H. Mawson (1861–1933)
Thomas Hayton Mawson (1861–1933) began work as a nurseryman and developed the practice of a garden maker for private clients largely in the north of England. Around the turn of the century he became a successful designer of public parks. He contributed to the emergent town planning movement with schemes in Britain and a growing reputation in Canada; in Greece he worked on the replanning of Athens and Salonica. A writer and a practitioner, he was both a town planner and a landscape architect; he became President of both new professional institutes. He was an early pioneer in the town planning movement, which he saw in terms of civic art, though his particular style was overtaken by other, more formative influences.
