Stormwater harvested from a permeable pavement for use in the fire extinguishing system and non-potable uses of a building: a case study
There is a growing concern about the scarcity of water resources due to the increase in the demand for potable water. A subject rarely addressed in the literature and with great potential for water savings is using stormwater in fire extinguishing systems. This work aims to evaluate the potential for using stormwater collected from a permeable pavement in the fire extinguishing system and non-potable uses of a building. The potential for potable water savings was estimated using the Netuno computer programme. Stormwater was meant to supply the fire fighting water storage and non-potable uses, such as flushing toilets, urinals and garden watering. The results show that stormwater can generate more than 70% potable water savings and completely supply the building during 83.9% of the days of the year. Integrating stormwater to fire protection systems is an important and effective way of increasing potable water savings in buildings.
