Structure and Problems of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area: The Future of Peripheries
With a total population of 35 million, the Tokyo Metropolitan Area (TMA) is one of the world's largest metropolitan areas. This article focuses on the peripheries within the TMA and how the changing socio-economic conditions affect them, discussing the current problems on land use as well as the perspective for their future. The peripheries are analyzed from the three points of view: 1) the regional plans of central government, 2) the industrial and economic perspectives, and 3) work areas and residential areas. In conclusion, the article stresses the importance of comprehensive and consistent land use rules.
