Urban agriculture in Vila Nova de Gaia: the nurturing symbiosis
Vila Nova de Gaia is the most populated county in the Greater Porto Metropolitan Area, and the third most populated in Portugal. Despite these numbers, it did not have an urban agriculture policy until 2012, when the Municipal Network of Urban Allotment Gardens was launched. This programme, apart from providing for allotments, perceives urban agriculture as an opportunity to implement new and inventive municipal policies. Vila Nova de Gaia owns a large area of municipal lands, many acquired through land ceding in urbanization processes. The installation of allotments gardens in these lands was seen as an opportunity to meet the demand for such spaces within the urban area, and to solve the maintenance problem of these gardens, while improving the environmental, aesthetic, and social quality of the landscape. This paper presents and discusses the Municipal Network of Urban Allotment Gardens, highlighting its capability to promote urban agriculture, despite the current economic crisis, and to change landscape ‘ownership’.
