A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Nutzbarmachung historischer Industrieareale für die Stadtentwicklung
Conservation and development are increasingly acknowledged concerns when transforming industrial heritage sites. These dual considerations lead to different approaches in utilizing historic sites for urban development. Furthermore, different concepts of conservation can be identified, including different planning practices. In this context, this paper defines three concepts of conservation, illustrated by case studies from Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom: (1) Preserving monuments: Conservation regarding listed sites, with a focus on preservation practices and controlled alteration; (2) Providing assets for locals: Industrial heritage sites used as assets defining a specific location. Here, branding strategies and real estate development guide future-oriented transformations hand in hand with radical alterations; (3) Reactivating infrastructural resources: Understanding industrial heritage sites as an urban resource. The third approach can be embedded within resource theory, which highlights its contribution to sustainable urban development.
