Growing identity, growing a home: contrasting functions of two nineteenth-century gardens
Women perceive their gardens as having multiple cultural functions. They may assure survival by providing necessary vitamins and minerals that may not be easily obtained elsewhere. Sale of the produce or flowers improves economic conditions, and the gardens themselves improve aesthetic conditions and bring not only physical but psychological sustenance to the gardener and the rest of her family. Oftentimes, gardens provide meeting places for friends, and social networks develop when plants are shared and traded. With so many functions, the gardens are perceived as living entities that bind the gardeners to their place.1
