Column Base Flexibility Effects on the Seismic Performance of Single-bay Single-story Steel Moment Frames
This paper investigates the seismic performance of one-story one-bay steel moment-resisting frames with flexible column bases from theoretical and numerical perspectives. It is shown that increasing the base flexibility decreased the column top moment for medium to long period elastic structures, thereby reducing the possibility of a soft-story mechanism. For inelastic systems, column top plastic hinge rotation tended to increase for short/medium periods. The top plastic hinge rotation ratio was insensitive to moderate variation in plastic hinge post-elastic stiffness but decreased as the hysteresis behavior changed to self-centering. In almost all cases, increasing the base flexibility increased the lateral deformation.
