Employment change in manufacturing industry in Cleveland, 1965–1976

This paper presents findings from a study of employment change in manufacturing industry in Cleveland County, an area of Northern England which is dominated by the chemical and iron and steel industries. The scale of employment contraction in these heavy industries is demonstrated and the impact of new openings is assessed. It is shown that regional policy measures have helped to stimulate the transfer of capital for labour in heavy industry and that the employment effect of new firm formations was marginal over the period 1965–1976 in Cleveland. The study was carried out using establishment-based data analysed by the components-of-change technique.
