Installing solar panels on heritage buildings: an Australian case study reveals a vexed issue
Rapid greenhouse gas emission reductions are necessary to limit climate change. Barriers to emission reductions must be addressed, including in the built environment, which is one of the largest contributors. An ordinary case where a resident erected solar panels (photovoltaics) on the roof of a house in a heritage area reveals how barriers to such initiatives arise. The local planning authority, despite supporting climate mitigation strategies, refused a permit and the solar panels had to be removed. Climate mitigation strategies need to be integrated with built heritage. Policy revision, provision of decision-making guidance, and development of professional competency is recommended.
