Occasionally the building practitioner is as glad to have a resume of the current situation as to learn of further advances, and this article falls into the former category. Although written with South African conditions in view—and based on material originally contributed to the 'Municipal Engineer' magazine—the article contains much that may be of general interest. The author works in the drainage and concrete engineering division of the National Building Research Institute of South Africa.
