A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Within the framework of the city partnership between Zurich and Kunming, a group of Swiss experts in historic preservation started to support Kunming's preservations efforts in 1996. In the initial phase, the intensive collaboration between Swiss and Chinese colleagues focused on evaluating historical building substance in the protected areas of Kunming. In 1997, the “Wen Ming Protection Area” was established. Soon afterwards, a pilot project involving the complete renovation of a historic house was initiated. In the meantime, the Kunming Street Block and Building Protection Office has been established. It plans to extend protection efforts to the entire city in 2003 and 2004.
