Structural Performance and Network Dependability of Bridge Materials in the US
This paper presents a comprehensive study of the US National Bridge Inventory analyzing the operational structural performance aspects of bridge materials in separate states. The study analyzes concrete, steel, and prestressed/post-tensioned concrete (PC) that constitute 96.1% of bridges. The analysis determines the material structural performance aspects that need relative improvement. Proportional performance need-based resource allocation for maintenance and intervention enables to prioritize the comparative improvement of network dependability. Maps of structural performance aspects indicate that materials correlate differently with climate. Condition performances correlate with cold-moist climate, while life cycle performances correlate with hot, Pacific marine, and cold-dry climate. Cross-correlations around the eastern North reveal potential structural complications for steel and PC bridges due to concurrent prevalence, older age, higher usage, and cold-moist climate affecting their structural performance aspects.
