A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The Rideau Canal Waterway, which flows between Ottawa and Kingston, constitutes one of the triumphs of early nineteenth century engineering. Constructed for defense and transportation purposes amid a virtual wilderness, the canal was built under extremely difficult physical and health conditions. Today the Waterway is designated as a National Historic Site and is preserved, as far as possible, in its original condition. It is now used almost wholly for recreational purposes but also serves a flood control function.
