Italian neologisms to name diffuse urbanization. Relationships between specialised language and urbanism actions
During the last decades of the twentieth century, in several Western European countries, the increase of diffuse and dispersed urbanization on large territories outside the compact cities, was considered by several urbanism actors (architects, urbanists, geographers, economists, sociologists) as very difficult to name using the stabilized urban vocabulary. According to these specialists, faced with these urban/rural deep transformations, some signifiers (countryside, periphery, city, etc.) appeared as dated and inadequate: new definitions have therefore been proposed. In this European framework of terminological inventions, we have focused our attention on the production of neologisms by Italian urbanists. We study the relationship between the evolution of the urban phenomenon and the production of neologisms, to understand their use and their stabilization in the specialized language. Especially, we study the meaning and the use of three new lexical interpretative images in different texts (campagna urbanizzata, urbanizzazione diffusa and città diffusa).
