This paper traces the incidence of defence expenditure in the regions of the United Kingdom over the years 1974/1975–1977/1978 inclusive. It examines contracts with industry and the expenditure resulting from the deployment of Ministry of Defence manpower. This paper shows that significant differences exist between the levels of defence expenditure in the regions reflecting these two factors. It concludes that the scope for using defence expenditure to influence regional income and employment is limited.
