Above Ground Test of Preservative Treatments and Surface Coatings for Timber
On exposure to the atmosphere, unprotected timber used above ground suffers degradation due to weathering (UV irradiation and moisture changes) and biological attack. In this test of timber exposed to the weather, the performances of various preservatives and surface coatings are evaluated after 9, 18 and 24 months' exposure, and the results are presented.
The principal timber species used were Pinus radiata (radiata pine) and Eucalyptus regnans (mountain ash). (Oregon, western red cedar and merbau were included in the untreated/uncoated condition only.) Seventeen preservatives and 21 surface coatings were used, and a total of 74 combinations of timber species/preservative treatment/surface coating were tested.
The test showed that all exposed timber requires some form of protection in order to prevent degradation, and highlighted the lack of effective clear film-forming finishes available for timber used outdoors.
