‘An all-day garden’—the kibbutz as a modernist landscape
The social vision of the kibbutz, the communal agricultural settlement that emerged in Israel at the beginning of the twentieth century, gave rise to a new spatial typology. The kibbutz landscape was theorized as a new spatial model connecting aesthetic concerns with a new social, political and ethical agenda. This paper examines the writing of kibbutz architect Samuel Bickels, who developed a synthetic idea of landscape as an ‘all-day garden’ that reflected the social vision of the kibbutz. This concept of the kibbutz landscape will be discussed in relation to modernist landscape principles. Bickels's all-day garden set a new performative agenda for the landscape as a setting for social interaction and became an important agent of an emerging social ideology.
