Marine Ecosystem Modeling in the Mediterranean
Within the framework of its Co-ordinated Mediterranean Pollution Monitoring and Research Programme, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in collaboration with a number of United Nations specialized agencies (including Unesco) and several national research institutions, is implementing a series of pilot projects in the Mediterranean covering a wide range of sampling required for knowledge of environmental processes and the monitoring of pollution. Recognizing the vital need to explore the functioning of marine ecosystems and their response to the environmental stresses imposed upon them, the participants at a Unesco workshop on Marine Ecosystem Modelling, held at Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia, from 18 to 22 October 1976, recommended the development of explorative marine ecosystem modelling in the Mediterranean. This would provide a mechanism for the co-ordination, design and balance of sampling programmes and provide national authorities with a continuous assessment of the series of environmental problems under study. The article below is based on the scientific report of the Dubrovnik workshop, a full version of which has just been published by Unesco's Division of Marine Sciences (Marine Ecosystem Modelling in the Mediterranean, 1977, 11 p., Paris, Unesco (Unesco Reports in Marine Sciences, 2)).
