A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Corrosion monitoring of metals
Corrosion in civil infrastructure causes structural failures and financial losses. Prompt and effective monitoring of corrosion can lead to failure prevention and cost savings. This paper describes the basis of a practical magnetic sensing scheme to detect corrosion in metals. The magnetic field measurements are carried out with economical and practical GMR sensors. Active and passive magnetic field sensing configurations are presented, and the ability to detect corrosion processes in steel and aluminium samples in aqueous environments is demonstrated.
