In a similar way to the USA, Australia has often been represented as a nation of wide-open spaces. It is cultivated spaces which represent the settlement on which modern Australia is based, yet such spaces feature rather less in narratives of Australian nationhood than the bush and desert traversed by the indigenous population, explorers, bush “battlers” and tourists.
