Four-variable trend-surfaces are linked with a formal spatio-temporal language (XYZT). The method of fitting such surfaces is briefly described. It is illustrated by synthesizing two polarized growth situations, with a development indicator (Z) sampled over a rectangular grid (XY) and over time (T). One situation is given a directional bias. The forms of the best-fit second degree hypersurfaces are demonstrated. Some problems and potential uses of the approach are reviewed. Emphasis is given to the directional information added in a spatio-temporal model by the use of XY locations rather than Euclidean distances.
