A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Under what banner might we bring together non-absorbent surfaces, living mycelium furniture, an old Soviet radio, and a precious school photo from a time before war? Which frameworks might allow us to entertain connections between things and their (sometimes conspicuous) absence, between entwined houses and people, between materiality and our memories, hopes, and dreams? I’ll begin by saying a few words about my own itineraries with things—with domestic ecologies, with clutter and ordering, with consumerism as well as consumption-critical lifestyle movements. This, I hope, will give some context to my comments, as well as the gaps, lacks, and fixations that might be perceptible therewithin. From there, I’ll bring into the mix a few themes and ideas that emerge from the evocative articles in this collection, saying a few words about each contribution along the way.
